The other day, I was talking to a good friend of mine, and we were discussing how no one gets to see the bad and the ugly.
What we see here are pretty pictures and beautiful designs, but no one witnesses the almost breakdown you had to get the website completed, or the stress you went through with all the back and forth with that dreadful client (complete honesty here, sorry!), or that deadline you have to meet and realize it’s almost 2AM and you really need rest because you have to get the kids ready for school in just a few hours.
I’m talking early mornings, late nights, and long weekends plus being expected to perform at 100% because your family needs you. The pressure is ON!
And yet, you soldier on, because that’s what we do as creatives, isn’t it?
We thrive on pressure, deadlines, and the exhilarating rush of unveiling a beautiful design. But boy, does it take a toll on us!
See, in the glamorous world of design and font creation, there’s a side that doesn’t make it to the Instagram stories or client newsletters — the late-night battles with uncooperative designs, the nail-biting countdowns to deadlines, and the sheer exhaustion that creeps up on you when you least expect it.
And then there’s the life outside your creative bubble.
Kids need lunches packed (And seriously, how many times have we let them munch on cookies because we’re too worn out to whip up a healthy breakfast?).
Laundry piles up, forming a mini Mount Everest in your hallway. And let’s not even talk about the sinking feeling you get when you realize that your daughter’s nap mat is still at home and you’ve got to take that 40-minute detour in rush-hour traffic to fetch it. Yikes!
Navigating this whirlwind of responsibilities and deadlines can feel like juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle — tricky, stressful, and did I mention, a little bit insane?
This is precisely why self-care is crucial for us creative souls.
When we’re constantly pouring ourselves into our work, our families, our homes, it’s essential that we replenish our spirits and recharge our batteries.
I know, I know, it’s easier said than done, especially when you’re wired to put everyone else first. It’s the mom’s guilt, isn’t it? That little voice in your head that whispers, “Sure, go relax, while the kids are causing chaos and the client emails are piling up. No, really, it’s fine.” (Note: It’s NEVER fine, is it?)
But trust me on this: Your business, your family, and most importantly, YOU, need you to be in top form, and that means taking care of yourself.
So, let’s get down to brass tacks — how do we juggle the mayhem of running a creative business while keeping our sanity intact?
The secret is simple: Do more of what lights you up, frequently!
Immerse yourself in nature with a decadent bottle of wine (because nothing says ‘self-care’ like savoring a vintage Chardonnay under the stars).
Dive back into that book you abandoned because you got swamped with work.
Rekindle your love affair with the gym (or have a dance party at home, no judgment here!).
Plant a mini oasis in your backyard, or better yet, treat yourself to a pampering spa day.
Heck, lock your bedroom door, put on some soothing music, and meditate your worries away!
Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
So, take a step back, breathe, and remember to nurture yourself. Nurture yourself back to life so you can get back to nurturing your family and business.
So, cheers to you, creative — here’s to keeping our sanity while riding the beautiful rollercoaster that is running a creative business!
